There’s always a lot of noise about the future. We talk about new technology, innovations, and inventions almost daily. Sometimes, it’s nice to look at the past to see where things originated. Modern passenger vehicles with diesel engines have a fascinating origin story. Want to find out who invented the diesel engine, how compression creates power, and why glow plugs are essential? This blog series will address those questions and explore diesel repairs and maintenance tips for diesel cars, diesel trucks & SUVs, and finally, diesel commercial vehicles.

THE HISTORY OF DIESEL ENGINES

Officially, the credit for designing the first diesel engine goes to Rudolf Diesel . He received a German patent for his original design in 1892. After additional research, Rudolf revised his initial design and obtained another patent in 1893. He completed and tested his first official working diesel engine (the Motor 250/400) in 1897.

The diesel engine design slowly evolved as engineers used it in a wide variety of applications. In 1903, France and Russia launched the first two diesel-powered ships for use in rivers and canals. In 1904, the French built the Z, the first diesel-powered submarine. Unfortunately, Rudolf Diesel died under mysterious circumstances from the ship SS Dresden on September 29, 1913. After his death, his engine design became the primary replacement for the steam piston engine.

Throughout the 1910s and 1920s, stationary machines, ocean vessels, locomotives, tractors, commercial trucks, and submarines used diesel engines as their primary source of power. The 1930s saw passenger cars, airships, tanks, and passenger trains using diesel-powered engines. Today, many commercial trucks, buses, and passenger vehicles use diesel engines based on Rudolf Diesel’s original concept.

HOW DIESEL ENGINES WORK

Diesel engines and gasoline engines are both internal combustion engines. Basically, the engines burn fuel to produce power. A gasoline-powered combustion engine requires a spark to ignite the fuel, but a diesel-powered engine does not. Simply put, the diesel engine is an internal combustion engine designed to use compression for the ignition instead of a spark. Once injected into the compressed air inside the combustion chamber, the diesel fuel ignites. Let’s break the process down:
COMPRESSION
Air heats up with compression. Therefore, the diesel engine draws air into the cylinders and then the pistons compress the air until it reaches about 700–900 Celsius (°C) or (1300–1650 Fahrenheit (°F). Next, the fuel injection system injects a fine mist of diesel fuel into the combustion chamber. The atomized fuel promptly ignites on contact with the compressed/superheated air.

This combustion creates more heat and air expansion in the cylinder, which causes the pistons to move up and down. A connecting rod transfers this action to a crankshaft that converts linear motion to rotary motion, thus creating power.

Modern engineers equip most diesel engines with either a turbocharger or a supercharger to increase the air volume intake. A good rule of thumb – the more air forced into the chamber, the greater the power output.
FOUR-STROKE DIESEL ENGINES
Diesel engines generally operate by repeating the combustion cycle of four strokes. The piston moves up and down two times, driven by the crankshaft, which rotates twice during the cycle. The combustion cycle works like this:
INTAKE STROKE: Piston moves down – Cylinder fills with air
COMPRESSION STROKE: Piston moves up – Compresses the air and mists fuel into the chamber
COMBUSTION STROKE: Fuel ignites – Pushes the piston down
EXHAUST STROKE: Exhaust releases – Pushes the piston up
TWO-STROKE DIESEL ENGINES
In a two-stroke diesel engine, the combustion cycle completes as the piston moves up and down one time. To create three steps in two strokes, the Intake and Exhaust strokes as well as the Compression and Combustion strokes are combined. Two-stroke diesel engines are usually smaller, lighter, and more efficient since they produce power with each rotation. Instead of once every two rotations, like in four-stroke diesel engines.
GLOW PLUGS
Diesel engines can be difficult to start in frigid weather or cold climates. The cold metal of the cylinder leaches out the heat built-up in the cylinder during the compression stroke. If the compressed air does not reach a high enough temperature, a diesel engine won’t start. Some diesel engines use glow plugs to alleviate this issue and aid ignition.

Glow plugs are like small heaters inside the cylinder to help the compressed air reach sufficient temperatures to ignite the fuel. Other methods include resistive grid heaters in the intake manifold that heat the incoming air or electric resistive heaters to warm the engine block. The use of glow plugs (or the other methods) enables diesel engines to operate in any weather or climate.

There are many reasons why your vehicle won’t accelerate, and they can vary depending on the type and age of your car. REASONS YOUR VEHICLE WON’T ACCELERATE

BAD SENSORS

Car manufacturers design modern vehicles with a ton of sensors that operate the various components within your engine. Most of the time, when one (or more) of these sensors go bad, it will trigger a dash warning light. Your mechanic can identify the diagnostic code once that happens. However, if the bad sensor doesn’t activate a dash light, then it can become a little tricky to locate which sensor has the issue. MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR (MAF)

CLOGGED OR DIRTY FILTERS

Combustion engine vehicles rely on the perfect mix of air and fuel to operate efficiently. Therefore, dirty or clogged filters can compromise the air-to-fuel ratio, resulting in acceleration issues. Fortunately, filters strain out impurities and debris from flowing through your engine. Unfortunately, over time as they can become dirty and/or clogged, you will need to replace them.

ENGINE AIR FILTER
A dirty engine air filter is a simple thing to check. Your owner’s manual will tell you where it is and how to inspect it. When dirt and debris clog your air filter, then there is less air flowing into your engine. Insufficient air flow impedes combustion, which can translate into slower acceleration. Auto manufacturers recommend changing your engine air filters twice a year.
FUEL FILTER
The fuel filter can also become clogged with debris and sludge. Therefore, the clogged filter compromises the proper combustion of air/fuel mix because the fuel can no longer flow freely. When you find a clogged fuel filter, you cannot clean it; replacing it is the only way to fix the issue.
FUEL INJECTOR

Why Does My Car’s A/C Blow Hot Air?

Now that summer is in full swing, the temperatures are rising and it’s getting really hot outside. I love cranking up my car’s A/C to stay cool during my daily commute. But this summer, my car’s A/C did nothing but blow hot air out of the vents! What should you do in this situations? Having routine maintenance on your car’s A/C system can prevent costly air conditioning repair, and most importantly, keep that cold air flowing all summer long. Read on to learn how your car’s A/C works, when to recharge the refrigerant, and just how vital the compressor is to a well working air conditioning system.

HOW YOUR CAR’S A/C SYSTEM WORKS

A car’s air conditioning system is a fairly complex array of components that need to work in unison to be effective. The Compressor is basically a pump attached to your engine’s crankshaft. It compresses a Refrigerant (low-pressure gas) into a high-pressure gas – a process that creates heat. It then cools that heated, high-pressure gas in the Condenser, which turns it into a liquid.

During this process, the Receiver-Dryer removes the excess moisture created through condensation. Then it travels through the Thermal Expansion Valve or the Orifice Tube which allows the high-pressure liquid to expand. Now the refrigerant is a cold, low-pressure liquid when it enters the Evaporator (usually in the car’s cabin) and absorbs the hot air inside it. The fan blows cold air inside, thereby forcing the heat outside. This process turns that cold, low-pressure liquid into a warm, low-pressure gas again and the process begins all over.

REFRIGERANT
Back in the day, most air conditioning systems used Freon. However, scientists determined that Freon harmed the ozone, so they developed a slightly safer alternative (R-134a or HFC-134a). It became the standard refrigerant for all vehicles after 1996. Nonetheless, leaking refrigerant is still not safe (according to the EPA ), and can cause very costly repairs down the road, Since your car’s A/C is a closed system, low refrigerant means there is a leak somewhere that a technician should locate and repair asap. Therefore, if your car is low on refrigerant, then that may be why the A/C is blowing hot air.
A/C COMPRESSOR
The compressor is what starts the whole process of your air conditioning. If it wears out or becomes damaged, the air will still flow through the system, but it will not be cold. Unfortunately, replacing a faulty compressor is fairly expensive. Expect to pay $500 – $800 (or more, depending on your specific car). A good way to keep your compressor in good working order is to run it for 10-15 minutes every 30 days or so, all year long. A compressor that sits idle too long can become compromised and may not work when the weather finally warms up.
CONDENSER
The condenser looks like a small radiator, and it functions much like one too. The hot liquid refrigerant cools as it travels through the many condenser tubes. If debris or damage blocks any of the condenser tubes, then the fluid cannot move through the system or cool down. If the fluid stays hot, then your car will be blowing hot, instead of cold, air into the interior. Another possible reason would be a cracked or broken tube inside the condenser. If this happens, refrigerant will leak. If there is not enough refrigerant in the A/C system, the air may blow hot, and severely low refrigerant could cause irreversible damage to the system.
RECEIVER-DRYER
The receiver-dryer is a small reservoir that contains desiccants, small grains that attract water. It is important to make sure no water gets into the evaporator since the temperature of the refrigerant can go below the freezing temperature of water. While the refrigerant will not freeze, any frozen water crystals in the system can cause damage.
THERMAL EXPANSION VALVE (TXV) OR ORIFICE TUBE
The TXV and the orifice tube perform the same function, but your system will only have one of them. The TXV has moving parts that can wear out and require replacement. The orifice tube has no moving parts, but debris can clog it. A trained technician can address this issue to keep your A/C running properly.
EVAPORATOR
The evaporator is usually located in the cabin of the car and also looks like a radiator. Its job is to absorb the heat from the air inside the car and take it outside. The fan blows on the cold coils generated by the low-pressure liquid, the coils absorb the heat from the air as it moves through the evaporator, leaving you with a cool interior. If there is an issue with the system before it reaches the evaporator, then you will get warm or hot air blowing into the car because the refrigerant is not the super cold low-pressure liquid it needs to be to generate cold air.

RECHARGING YOUR CAR’S A/C

If the refrigerant in your car’s A/C is low, then a service technician can top off. If it is really low, however, a technician will need to drain, clean, and refill it in a process called Recharging. Low refrigerant is a sign that there are bigger issues at play, and the technician should find the source of the leak and you should have it repaired.

HOW DO HYBRID AUTO BATTERIES WORK?

PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE

Be sure to check your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s recommendations on how often you should have your hybrid serviced. Below are some typical inspections and services that you should have performed regularly. Some are safe for you to do at home. However, you might consider having a trained hybrid technician perform your hybrid car’s maintenance.

HYBRID OIL CHANGE

Since your hybrid auto still uses a combustion engine part of the time, you will still need to get regular oil changes. The frequency may be less often than a regular, non-hybrid car. Check your owner’s manual for the recommended service mileage/time markers for oil changes.

The rotors are basically a spinning metal disc behind your wheel that is compressed by the brake pads via the calipers to stop your vehicle. If the brake pads are not changed often enough, the rotors can get warped, scratched, or otherwise damaged, which require them to be resurfaced. They can also accumulate rust and road debris which should be cleaned off regularly.
BRAKE FLUID
The brake fluid is the literal moving force behind your vehicle’s braking system. The pressure of the fluid being pushed through the brake lines is what makes all the components move properly. If the brake fluid is low, check for leaks. However, if no leaks are found, then the brake pads may need to be replaced, or the brake fluid may be near the end of its life. Brake fluid is a consumable item and factors like driving habits, heat, and humidity can impact how often it needs to be topped off and/or changed.
BRAKE FLUID FLUSH
Brake fluid that has reached the end of its life can become acidic and corrosive which can affect the other components in your brake assembly. Once your brake fluid becomes acidic it should be flushed out and replaced with fresh brake fluid to avoid more expensive repairs in the future.
